Xiang'an Undersea Tunnel to be dug through by month's end |

| Following completion of the right tunnel of Xiang’an Undersea Tunnel in June, the left tunnel and service tunnel are expected to be dug through at the end of this month, according to the China Railway 18th Construction Corp, one of the project contractors. Currently, fire resistant paint and lighting equipment have been partly installed in the tunnel. In the deepest area of the "V"-shaped tunnel,led light bulb workers are stepping up the construction of water collection basin. In addition, constructions of the two ventilation shafts at the ends of the tunnel have started, according to a staff member of Xiamen Road & Bridge Construction Group. The staff member said the water collection basin is one of the main construction projects at present. The basin can hold more than 3,000 cubic meters of water and because the tunnel is “V”-shaped, the water used to clean the tunnel will be brought into the basin, led light fixtures before being pumped out. Xiang’an Undersea Tunnel, which will be the first channel tunnel on the Chinese mainland, is scheduled to open to traffic at the end of this year. The tunnel will be about nine kilometers long and 70 meters deep under the sea, and will cost 3.25 billion yuan (USD391.5 million). |
